4th International Symposium on
Submarine Mass Movements and Their Consequences
November 8-11, 2009 / Austin, Texas

Third Announcement
The 4th International
Symposium on Submarine Mass Movements and Their Consequences will be
hosted by the Bureau of Economic Geology, Jackson School of Geosciences
on the Pickle Research Campus of the University of Texas in Austin,
Texas, on 7-12 November 2009. Please see the symposium website at:
http://www.beg.utexas.edu/indassoc/dm2/Conference2009/home.htm
The main objective of
this event is to bring a world perspective of submarine mass movements
and their consequences by assembling outstanding contributions from
active international researchers, academic institutions, and the energy
industry. This approach provides full coverage of the many scientific
and engineering aspects that are currently being undertaken in the study
of submarine mass movements.
POSTER SESSIONS
There is still time to
participate by presenting at the poster session, which will be
highlighted at the 4 th
symposium
this year, by being displayed for at least half of the symposium. There
will be specific times scheduled for the poster sessions throughout the
symposium, so don't miss this opportunity for focused interaction with
your colleagues. Format for the poster will be one 4 x 8 ft landscape
poster board. Abstracts of 250 words for poster session will need to be
sent
as soon as possible to the e-mail
address:
mailto:submarinemassmovements4th@gmail.com
REGISTRATION ($675 USD)
Registration will
include:
- Access to the symposium oral
presentations and poster sessions for three days (Monday through
Wednesday, 9-11 November)
- One copy of the symposium abstracts
volume.
- One copy of the 4th edition of the
Submarine Mass Movements and Their Consequences volume published
by Springer.
- Lunches and two coffee breaks per day
for three days (Monday through Wednesday, 9-11 November), an
ice-breaking event (Sunday evening, 8 November), hors d'oeuvre at two
poster-session receptions, and a symposium dinner (Tuesday evening, 10
November).
Register as soon as
possible to assure your participation in the symposium. Walk-up
registrations at the door will be $750 USD. Register by credit
card at:
http://www.beg.utexas.edu/indassoc/dm2/Conference2009/registration.htm
TECHNICAL PROGRAM
More than 60 technical
contributions will be published in the Springer volume, covering the
conference themes. Eight keynote speakers have indicated participation
in the symposium:
Rick Beaubouef, Hess
Corporation, USA -Thoughts on the
sequence stratigraphy of mass-transport deposits and their possible
roles in shaping hydrocarbon traps: mass-transport deposits of the
Brazos-Trinity slope system
Jose Frey-Martinez,
Repsol-YPF, Libya - 3D seismic
interpretation of mass-transport deposits: implications for basin
analysis and geohazard evaluation
Mary C. Nodine, GEI
Consultants, Inc., USA - Risk
analysis for hurricane wave-induced submarine mudslides
Jocelyn L.H.Grozic,
University of Calgary, Canada -
Interplay between gas hydrates ansd submarine slope failure
Patrick Lynett, Texas A&M
University, USA - Hydrodynamic
modeling of tsunamis generated by submarine landslides: Generation,
propagation, and shoreline impact
Doug Masson, National
Oceanography Center, UK - Large
landslides on continental margins: Process, hypotheses, and outstanding
questions
Charles Paull, MBARI, USA
- Submarine mass transport within
Monterey Canyon: benthic disturbance controls on the distribution of
chemosynthetic biological communities
David Tappin, British
Geological Survey, UK -
Mass-transport events and their tsunamigenic hazard
For list of speakers
and oral presentation titles that will be presented at the
symposium, see the preliminary program at the symposium website at:
http://www.beg.utexas.edu/indassoc/dm2/Conference2009/prelim.htm
FIELD TRIPS
Why not join use for the
field trip on
Saturday, 7
November 2009, entitled, "Geology, Frontier History, and Selected
Wineries of the Hill Country Appellation, Central Texas Field Trip"
lead by Pete Rose, past president of AAPG. Also, don’t miss the
virtual field trip on
Thursday, 12 November 2009, that will
include a half-day short course on assessing mass movements from seismic
data to core, a mega-flume demonstration of catastrophic mass movement,
and a seismic-volume visualization session. See the website for more
details, timing, and costs:
http://www.beg.utexas.edu/indassoc/dm2/Conference2009/fieldtrips.htm
SYMPOSIUM LODGING
For the symposium, we
have negotiated the reduced rate of $85 USD/night for a one-bedroom
suite and $115 USD/night for a two-bedroom suite at the Northcross
Suites, just 1.8 km southwest of the symposium venue. Northcross Suites
has agreed to provide a shuttle service to and from the symposium in the
morning and late afternoon. There are only a limited number of
reservations at this low rate, so register early. For more information
about this hotel and other options, see the conference website at:
http://www.beg.utexas.edu/indassoc/dm2/Conference2009/accom.htm
Alternatively, go
directly to the Northcross Suites website for complete details. Make
sure you mention that you are participating in the Submarine Mass
Movement Symposium:
http://www.northcrosssuites.com/
Other accommodations are available on
your own in the greater Austin area near the symposium venue and in
downtown Austin, approximately 8 km to the south of the symposium venue.
