ICP-511 "Submarine MassMovements and Their Consequences" at the

33rd International Geological Congress

Oslo (6 - 14 August 2008)

At the next 33rd International Geological Congress in Oslo (6 - 14 August 2008) we are convening a session on:
"Ocean margin and ocean island sediment mass movements and their consequences: Where? When? Why?"
(Session OSP-03; Marine Geoscience & Paleoceanography program)

We would like to invite you to submit a talk or poster. The session is inline with the aims of the IUGS-UNESCO sponsored project IGCP-511. The second circular and additional information can be found on the congress website at: http://www.33igc.org. You will find the session listed under the “Marine Geoscience & Paleoceanography program” of the “Disciplinary Symposia”. Two key-note lectures to present the state-of-the-art in offshore geotechnics, submarine slope instability and interaction between researchers and industry will be presented by:

•          Nabil Sultan (IFREMER, France)

•          Tore Jan Kvalstad (NGI, Norway)

IGCP-511 has set up 5 grants (about 400€ each) to support participation to this session (Note also that the congress has a  "Geohost program", deadline soon). Priority will be given to students (proof of student status might be requested) and participants from developing countries. Conditions are:

•          Applicant must be first author of the abstract.

•          Abstract should be submitted to session OSP-03.

•          Applicant must present the talk at this conference session (OSP-03).

•          Only one applicant from each institution will be selected (unless too few institutions among the applications).

The successful grantees will be selected randomly among the applicants fulfilling the conditions. Applications should be Emailed to the conveners (urgeles@ub.edu). Mark the Email "33rd IGC grant application" in the subject field. Selection of candidates and final decision will be made shortly after abstract deadline expiration. Payment will be made by direct transfer after the conference.

The deadline for abstract (oral and poster) submission is February 1st 2008.

Other important deadlines are:

•          30 November 2007: Geohost application. Deadline extended to December 15th.

•          31 March 2008: Registration fee deadline for inclusion of accepted abstract in program

•          March 2008: Timetable for symposia, excursions, etc. on the web

•          15 April 2008: End of early registration and payment (€560/410)

•          May 2008: Detailed program on the web – Final timetable for the program

•          15 July 2008: End of intermediately priced registration (€610/460)

•          After 15 July 2008: Registration fee €660/510

•          July 2008: Abstracts available on the website

OSP-03 Ocean margin and ocean island sediment mass movements and their consequences: Where? When? Why?

During the last decades a large advance has been made in our understanding of submarine mass-wasting processes and their consequences. Sponsoring by UNESCO of project IGCP-511 (Submarine Mass Movements and Their Consequences) has brought a worldwide perspective to this field. This session will explore the findings made during the last years in relation to the setting, timing and mechanisms involved in submarine mass wasting. Abstracts addressing topics such as the geometry and architecture of deposits, dating, modeling of failure initiation, post-failure evolution and tsunamogenesis, industry or applied case-histories, application of new methodologies, and measurement and monitoring of physical properties relevant to determining submarine slope stability will be welcome.

We look forward to meeting you in Oslo!

The session conveners:

Roger Urgeles (Spain)

Jacques Locat (Canada)

Jürgen Mienert (Norway)

Anders Solheim (Norway)

Vasilios Lykousis (Greece)
